While it is an exciting milestone filled with opportunities for growth and learning, the transition can also bring up a lot of emotions. As a parent, you want to make the best choices for your child, but it is easy to feel unsure during this new phase. At our preschool, we work closely with families to make the daycare transition as smooth as possible. In doing so, we have noticed some common mistakes that parents make, completely understandable ones, and we are here to help you avoid them. ![Common Mistakes Parents Make When Starting Daycare](https://maplelawnchildcare.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/kindergarten.png "kindergarten - Maplelawn Childcare - The Best Way to Start your Child's Education") **Mistake #1: Waiting Too Long to Prepare Your Child** Many parents assume that toddlers or infants don’t need much prep before starting daycare. But even young children benefit from gentle introductions. Waiting until the first day to explain what´s happening can lead to unnecessary stress for your child. **Mistake #2: Having High Expectations for the First Week** It is natural to want the transition to go perfectly, but the truth is, some children cry, resist, or have mixed feelings for a few days or even weeks. This doesn’t mean daycare isn’t working. It just means your child is adjusting. What to do instead: Expect ups and downs. Trust the process. Communicate openly with your child´s caregivers, and ask about how your child is doing throughout the day. Most children settle in beautifully with patience, consistency, and support from both [home and school](https://maplelawnchildcare.com/how-our-toddler-program-builds-a-bridge-between-school-and-home/). **Mistake #3: Lingering too long at drop-off** Saying goodbye can be tough, for both you and your child. But stretching out the moment can make separation harder. Children pick up on our emotions, and if they sense your hesitation, they may feel more uncertain. What to do instead: Create a short and loving goodbye routine: a hug, a kiss, a wave. Then leave confidently, even if your child is teary. Teachers are trained to comfort and redirect children quickly and you are always just a phone call away. **Mistake #4: Not sharing important information with teachers** Some parents feel shy about sharing personal details, thinking they will bother the teachers. But knowing about your child´s sleep, mood, or routines at home helps caregivers respond better during the day. What to do instead: Be open with your child´s teachers. Let them know about major changes, new behaviors, or even favorite toys or phrases. A strong home-school connection creates a more personalized and supportive experience for your child. **Mistake #5: Choosing a daycare based only on convenience** It is tempting to pick the closest or most affordable option but not all childcare programs are created equal. Choosing a center that does not align with your values or your child´s needs can lead to frustration later. What to do instead: Look for a [preschool that shares your vision for early learning](https://maplelawnchildcare.com/messy-fun-meaningful-learning-engaging-art-activities-at-our-preschool-daycare/). Visit in person, ask questions, and observe the environment. During these first years, our preschoolers are eager to learn and understand the world around them, their brain is like a sponge trying to soak any new words and concepts that are introduced to them. Here are some key expectations and day-to-day activities to foster and develop your child’s expressive and receptive language: 1. Language rich environment: Surrounding your child with a language rich environment enables your child to initiate and attend brief conversations, tell simple stories about objects, events, and people not present and build three-to-four-word sentences. Conversation, narration and storytelling are all a part of a language rich environment. 2\. Conversations Having a household where conversation is a core part of their day-to-day creates an environment that fosters language development. Engaging meaningful conversations with your child, whether it be during playtime or dinner time and asking open-ended questions sets the foundation for your child’s expressive language. 3\. Narration and storytelling Describing your daily activities throughout the day, whether it be bath time, cooking or going shopping provides the vocabulary for your child to understand the world around them. It also provides an opportunity to model appropriate phrases, words, and behavior. Sharing story time, reading, and observing books according to their age fosters a love of reading that impacts later years. ![Preschoolers language](https://maplelawnchildcare.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/EP.png "EP - Maplelawn Childcare - The Best Way to Start your Child's Education") ![Preschoolers language](https://maplelawnchildcare.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/1-1.png "1 - Maplelawn Childcare - The Best Way to Start your Child's Education") 4\. Encourage play Pretend play encourages your child to use their imaginative play, which usually involves dialogue and storytelling even if they are quietly playing. Participating in pretend play allows the opportunity to expand their vocabulary, explain how things work and model appropriate expressive language while connecting their real-life experiences. 5\. Playdates Playdates with other children promote language development through communication and cooperation. Social interaction expands the world your child is experiencing, through playdates children can learn new vocabulary, experience new ways for things to work, and use [social skills](https://maplelawnchildcare.com/teaching-preschoolers-about-emotions-and-social-skills-building-strong-foundations-for-life/) to interact with others. It also fosters children to engage in conversation with children their age. 6\. Sing songs and nursery rhymes Repetitive melodies create opportunities for children to recognize and remember words and phrases through practice. Singing songs and nursery rhymes together, as well as music creates new neural pathways that encourage language development. To songs, nursery rhymes, and music, adding hand movements, dances, and other fun activities helps your child understand and remember the words, as it becomes a significant experience. 7\. Supervise and limit screen time It is true that we live in a highly technological world, however, our preschoolers will have sufficient time to explore any and all devices available out there. To truly foster your [preschool skills,](https://maplelawnchildcare.com/little-hands-big-skills-playful-fine-motor-activities-for-preschoolers/) supervising and limiting screen time will reap the benefits during this time of their development. When allowing screen time, choose high-quality, educational programs that will promote language development. ![Preschoolers language](https://maplelawnchildcare.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/kindergarten.png "kindergarten - Maplelawn Childcare - The Best Way to Start your Child's Education") Conclusion Every child develops at their own pace. Creating a patient, supporting and enriching environment will enable your preschooler’s language skills to flourish. Parent involvement is key, and creating a language-rich environment will create a [strong foundation](https://maplelawnchildcare.com/teaching-preschoolers-about-emotions-and-social-skills-building-strong-foundations-for-life/) for your child’s future success. However, if you notice that the tips mentioned above have not yielded the results you expect, or observe significant language delays and difficulties, early intervention should be your priority. It is a new chapter filled with excitement, questions, and sometimes a few tears (from both sides!). While many people think school readiness means knowing letters, numbers, or shapes, the truth is, it is much more than that. Helping your child feel safe, confident, and curious in a new environment lays the foundation for a positive early learning experience. At [our preschool](https://maplelawnchildcare.com/preschool-program-3-5-years/), we partner with families to make this transition as smooth and meaningful as possible. What is school readiness? School readiness is not about academic pressure. In early childhood education, it is about building the social, emotional, and [practical skills](https://maplelawnchildcare.com/messy-fun-meaningful-learning-engaging-art-activities-at-our-preschool-daycare/?et_fb=1&PageSpeed=off) that help children feel secure and eager to learn in a group setting. ![schedule a tour](https://maplelawnchildcare.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/9.jpg "9 - Maplelawn Childcare - The Best Way to Start your Child's Education") When preparing for childcare, focus on these key areas: - Emotional resilience: Can your child handle short separations from you? Can they express needs using words? - Social skills: Are they beginning to share, take turns, or play alongside others? - Independence: Can they manage simple tasks like handwashing, eating with utensils, or cleaning up toys? - Curiosity and attention: Are they beginning to listen to stories, explore materials, or follow a basic routine? These soft skills grow through everyday life, and they are exactly what your child will strengthen in preschool. Acknowledge the Feelings: Yours and Theirs Transitioning into [preschool can stir up big](https://maplelawnchildcare.com/little-hands-big-skills-playful-fine-motor-activities-for-preschoolers/) emotions. Your child might feel anxious or excited – or both at the same time. You might too! That is okay. Children take cues from us. Talking openly, offering reassurance, and staying calm even when you are unsure helps your toddler feel more confident about what is coming. Tips to Ease the Transition into Preschool or Daycare Here are some supportive ways to help your toddlers prepare for this exciting new stage: 1. Visit the Preschool Together: Before the first day, attend an open house or schedule a tour. Let your child explore the space. Familiarity makes transitions and new places feel safer. 2. Start the Routine Early: Begin adjusting your home schedule to match the preschool routine a few weeks in advance. Practice earlier bedtimes, consistent morning wake-ups, and regular meals. 3. Read books about starting preschool: Children’s books like Llama Llama Misses Mama or The Kissing Hand can help your child understand what to expect and name their feelings. 4. Talk About What They Will Do: Use positive, simple language to describe what happens at preschool: “There will be toys to play with, songs to sing, and new friends to meet. Mommy/Daddy will always come back to pick you up.” 5. Let them Practice Independence: Encourage your toddlers to do small tasks on their own – putting on shoes, cleaning up, or washing hands. This builds confidence for navigating the day without you. 6. Create a Goodbye Ritual: A consistent hug, wave, or short phrase like “See you after lunch!” gives your child a sense of routine and reassurance during drop-off. Preschoolers are growing rapidly, not just physically and cognitively, but socially and emotionally too. Helping young children develop emotional awareness and social skills is one of the most powerful ways we can support their long-term well-being and success. **Why Emotional Learning Matters in Preschool** The [preschool years are a critical time for emotional development](https://maplelawnchildcare.com/nurturing-your-preschoolers-language-development/). Children are learning to identify feelings like happiness, frustration, sadness, and excitement but they don´t always have the words to express them. Without support, emotions can come out as tantrums, withdrawal, or conflict with others. That is why teaching children how to understand and regulate their feelings is a core part of our daily routine. Social emotional learning, also known as SEL education, lays the foundation for strong relationships, resilience, empathy, and self-confidence, all skills that help children thrive in school and in life. **How We Teach Emotions and Social Skills at Preschool** At our preschool, we intentionally embed emotional learning into everything we do. Here´s how: - Naming emotions We use everyday moments to help children recognize and name their feelings. Whether a child is upset because a friend took a toy or proud of their drawing, our teachers give then the words: “You are feeling frustrated,” or “You look really proud!” This helps children begin to understand and talk about their emotions clearly and safely. - Books and stories We read books about emotions and friendship daily. Stories give children a safe space to explore complex feelings, see how characters solve problems, and build empathy. After story time, we often ask questions like, “How do you think she felt?” or “What could he have done differently?” - Feelings Charts and Visuals In our classrooms, we use feeling charts, mirrors, and emotion cards to help children identify how they feel throughout the day. These tools give even our youngest learners a way to communicate their needs without words. - Role Play and Social Scenarios We practice kindness, problem-solving, and turn-taking through dramatic play and guided conversations. If there is a disagreement, our teachers guide children through the process of using their words, listening to each other, and finding solutions together. - Mindfulness and Calm-Down Spaces Teaching children how to regulate their emotions is key. We use simple mindfulness exercises like breathing with a stuffed animal or listening to calming music, and we offer calm-down corners where children can regroup when they feel overwhelmed. **Supporting Social Emotional Growth at Home** Parent are their child´s first and most important teachers. Here are a few ways you can reinforce emotional learning at home: - Model emotional expression: Talk about your own feelings and how you manage them. - Praise efforts to use kind words, take turns, or show empathy. - Ask your child about their feelings each day, not just their activities. - Read books about emotions together and ask open-ended questions. **A strong start for lifelong success** Helping children understand and manage their emotions doesn’t just make [preschool smoother; it prepares](https://maplelawnchildcare.com/easing-the-transition-preparing-your-toddlers-for-preschool-or-daycare/) them for kindergarten, friendships, teamwork, and more. When children feel safe, heard, and emotionally supported, they are more open to learning and more confident in who they are. At our Preschool, we don´t just teach academics; we nurture the whole child. Our commitment to social-emotional learning ensures your child develops the tools they need to communicate, connect, and grow. Ready to learn more about how we support emotional development? Separation anxiety in toddlers and young preschoolers is completely normal. For many children, this may be their first experience spending time away from home or a primary caregiver. Understanding how to support your child during this transition can make the first days of school smoother and more positive. With the right preparation and a calm approach, families can help children feel safe, confident, and ready to begin their preschool journey. Understanding Separation Anxiety Separation anxiety in toddlers is a natural aprt of early childhood development. Young children form strong attachments to their caregivers, and it is normal for them to feel uncertain when routines change. Tears, clinging, or hesitation during drop-off are common and usually short-lived. It is important for parents to remember that these reactions do not mean a child is not ready for preschool. In fact, learning to separate and reconnect is an important skills that supports emotional growth and independence. Preparing Before the First Day Preparation plays a key role in [easing the transition](https://https://maplelawnchildcare.com/easing-the-transition-preparing-your-toddlers-for-preschool-or-daycare/) to school. Talking about preschool in a positive and calm way helps children know what to expect. Visiting the classroom ahead of time, meeting teachers and walking through the daily routine can help reduce anxiety. Reading books about starting [school and practicing short separations at home](https://https://maplelawnchildcare.com/how-our-toddler-program-builds-a-bridge-between-school-and-home/) can also support the transition. These small steps help children build confidence and familiarity before the first day arrives. The Power of a Quick Goodbye One of the most effective first day of preschool tips is creating a consistent and quick goodbye ritual. While it may feel comforting to stay longer, prolonged goodbyes can actually increase anxiety for young children. A quick goodbye ritual might include: - A hug and a kiss - A short, reassuring phrase such as “I’ll be back after snack time” - A wave at the classroom door Keeping goodbyes predictable and brief helps children understand that parents will return. Calm confidence from caregivers sends a powerful message of trust and safety. Supporting Children During the Transition Preschools that support a smooth transition to school understand the emotional needs of young children. Teachers are trained to comfort children, redirect attention, and [engage them in familiar activities](https://https://maplelawnchildcare.com/messy-fun-meaningful-learning-engaging-art-activities-at-our-preschool-daycare/) shortly after arrival. Activities such as reading a favorite book, offering a sensory activity, or inviting a child to help with a classroom task can [ease the transition](https://https://maplelawnchildcare.com/easing-the-transition-preparing-your-toddlers-for-preschool-or-daycare/). These strategies help children feel connected and supported as they settle into the day. How School Partner with Families Strong communication between families and teachers is essential during the first weeks of preschool. Many local childcare programs encourage parents to share information about their child’s routines, comfort items, and interests. This partnership allows teachers to respond thoughtfully to each child’s needs. When children sense consistency between [home and school](https://https://maplelawnchildcare.com/how-our-toddler-program-builds-a-bridge-between-school-and-home/), they feel more secure and confident. When Anxiety Persists While separation anxiety is common, it typically improves within a few weeks. Maintaining consistent routines and calm goodbyes helps children adjust more quickly. If anxiety continues, open communication with teachers can help identify additional support strategies. Starting [preschool is a big](https://https://maplelawnchildcare.com/little-hands-big-skills-playful-fine-motor-activities-for-preschoolers/) step, but it is also an opportunity for growth. For families exploring childcare options, choosing a [preschool that understands emotional transitions](https://https://maplelawnchildcare.com/easing-the-transition-preparing-your-toddlers-for-preschool-or-daycare/) and support both children and parents can make all the difference. Parents often wonder whether half-day or full-day preschool is the best fit for their child and family routine. Understanding the benefits of each option can help families make confident decisions that support both their child’s development and daily logistics. Preschool enrollment is an important milestone, and schedule choices affect how children adjust to school, build routines, and develop independence. The good news is that both half-day and full-day programs can provide strong learning experiences when designed thoughtfully around children’s needs. Understanding Your Child’s Needs Every child is different, and there is no single schedule that works for all families. Factors such as age, temperament, attention span, and family routines all play a role in deciding which preschool option is best. Some children thrive with shorter days and gradual transitions, while other enjoy extended time to play and build friendships. Younger preschoolers or children attending school for the first time may benefit from shorter schedules while they adjust to new routines. Meanwhile, children who are already comfortable in group settings often enjoy the longer day because they have no mor time to explore, learn, and socialize. Family logistics also matter. Work schedules, commute time, childcare needs, and home routines should all be considered when choosing between half-day and full-day preschool options. Preschoolers are natural scientists, constantly exploring how the world works through play, observation, and experimentation. Through hands-on learning experiences, young children build early science and problem-solving skills in meaningful and engaging ways. At this age, children are curious about everything. They ask questions, test ideas, and try new approaches without fear of mistakes. A quality preschool environment encourages this natural curiosity, helping children develop confidence as they explore science, technology, engineering, art, and math through everyday experiences. Why STEM Matters in Preschool STEM education supports curiosity, critical thinking, and creativity. For young children, STEM concepts are introduced through play and exploration rather than formal instruction or worksheets. Learning happens through doing, touching, experimenting and discovering. When children pour water, build structures, or plant seeds, they are learning about cause and effect, balance, measurement, and growth. These experiences lay the groundwork for future learning without pressure. Children begin forming early science skills simply by observing what happens when they mix colors, stack blocks, or watch plants grow. STEM learning also encourages persistence. When a tower falls or a structure does not stand, children try again. This problem-solving mindset helps children understand that mistakes are part of learning. Over time, they build resilience and confidence as they work through challenges. Another important benefit of STEM activities is collaboration. Many experiments and building projects involve teamwork, helping children practice communication and cooperation while learning. How Preschoolers Learn STEM Concepts - Water Play Water tables teach volume, movement, and basic physics concepts as children pour, scoop, and observe how water flows through containers and tubes. - Block building Building structures supports early engineering skills and problem-solving as children experiment with balance, size, and stability. - Gardening Planting seeds introduces biology concepts while teaching responsibility and patience as children observe growth over time. - Art integration Art projects encourage creativity while connecting to science concepts such as color mixing, texture and design. - Exploration and questioning Encouraging children to ask questions and predict outcomes builds curiosity and confidence in learning through experimentation. Through these playful experiences, children learn to think critically while still enjoying the fun and creativity of preschool learning. STEM learning does not require complex materials. Everyday classrooms tools and simple experiments can spark meaningful discovery. How we support STEAM At (PRESCHOOL NAME), STEAM learning is part of everyday play. Teachers carefully prepare hands-on experiences that invite children to explore, ask questions, and experiment freely. Activities are designed to match children’s developmental stages so learning feels natural and exciting. Art, science, movement, and problem-solving activities are integrated throughout the day to support the whole-child development. Teachers encourage children to describe what they observe, predict what might happen next, and test their ideas through exploration. Children are supported as they try new ideas, make adjustments, and discover solutions. Instead of giving an answer immediately, teachers guide children to think through challenges and build confidence in their ability to learn through experience. This playful approach ensures that learning remains joyful while still developing [important early science and math skills](https://maplelawnchildcare.com/the-importance-of-reading-in-early-childhood-boosting-literacy-skills/) that prepare children for future academic success. Early STEM learning nurtures curiosity, creativity, and confidence. When children are encouraged to explore freely and experiment, they develop problem-solving skills that support lifelong learning and academic readiness. Families interested in a preschool that values hands-on STEAM education and encourages curious learners are invited to book a tour at (PRESCHOOL NAME) to see how exploration and discovery are part of everyday learning. Through the various stages of childhood, separation anxiety can manifest especially during the toddler and preschool years. Separation anxiety can occur in a variety of situations, including the beginning of a school year and after the holidays. In this article, we will explore the causes and symptoms of separation anxiety in small children, offer some tips and tricks for parents and caregivers, and discuss how separation anxiety can be particularly relevant during the start of the school year and holiday period. **Understanding Separation Anxiety in Small Children** Separation anxiety in small children typically begins around 8 to 14 months of age and can persist up to the age of 3 or 4, although it may vary from child to child. It occurs due to the child’s growing awareness of their attachment figures, usually their parents or primary caregivers, and a fear of being separated from them. It is important to recognize that separation anxiety is a normal part of a child’s emotional development. It reflects the healthy attachment a child has formed with their caregivers and a growing sense of individuality. **Common symptoms of separation anxiety.** Children experiencing separation anxiety may exhibit a range of emotional and behavioral symptoms, such as: 1. Clinginess: They may become more clingy and see physical closeness with their caregiver. 2. Crying and Tantrums: Separation anxiety can lead to crying, whining, and tantrums when the caregiver attempts to leave. 3. Refusal to leave home: Some children may refuse to leave their home, especially if they fear separation from their familiar environment. 4. Fear of strangers: They may become wary of unfamiliar people and resist being left with other caregivers or in daycare. 5. Nighttime separation anxiety: It can also manifest as bedtime resistance, with the child unwilling to sleep alone. **Tips and Tricks for managing Separation Anxiety.** 1. Gradual separation: Start with short separations and gradually increase the time away from the child. This can help them become accustomed to being apart from you. In school, this gradual separation is usually referred to ‘adaptation period’. 2. Create a Routine: Establishing a consistent daily routine can provide a sense of security for your child, as they know what to expect. 3. Positive Goodbyes: When saying goodbye, be brief but reassuring. Reassure your child that you will return. 4. Transitional Object: Some children find comfort in a favorite toy or blanket. Allowing them to bring this item can provide a source of security. 5. Introduce caregivers: If someone else cares for your child, introduce them gradually and involve your child in the process. 6. Empathetic communication: Encourage your child to express feelings and fears. Validate their emotions and offer comfort. **Separation Anxiety at the beginning of the school year and holidays** The start of the school year can be a particularly challenging time for children dealing with separation anxiety. It involves leaving the comfort of home and familiar caregivers to venture into a new environment To ease this transition: 1. Preparation: Talk to your child about what to expect at school. Visit the school beforehand, if possible, to help familiarize them with the environment. 2. Establish a routine: set a consistent morning routine to make the transition smoother. This routine can include a special goodbye ritual. 3. Positive reinforcement: Encourage your child to focus on the exciting aspects of school, such as new friends, fun activities, and learning experiences. Separation anxiety is a normal part of a child’s development and understanding its causes and symptoms is crucial for parents and caregivers. By using the tips and tricks mentioned above, you can help your child navigate separation anxiety more smoothly, whether it’s at the beginning of the school year or after the holidays. Patience, empathy, and a supportive environment are crucial for children to outgrow separation anxiety as they become more confident and independent. From the moment they begin to babble, infants are laying the foundation for how they will think, communicate, and understand the world around them. While parents are a child´s first teachers, enrolling your child in a quality [preschool environment can significantly enhance their language skills,](https://maplelawnchildcare.com/teaching-preschoolers-about-emotions-and-social-skills-building-strong-foundations-for-life/) especially during the critical window of early brain development. Why Language Development Starts Early By the time a child reaches their first birthday, their brain has already formed more than one million neural connections every second and continues to grow based on the quality of their interactions and surroundings. Research shows that rich, responsive, and consistent verbal interaction helps infants develop vocabulary, listening skills, and even emotional intelligence. This is where high-quality childcare [plays a powerful role as an active](https://maplelawnchildcare.com/little-hands-big-skills-playful-fine-motor-activities-for-preschoolers/) contributor to your child´s developmental milestones. The Power of Daycare Interactions In a nurturing daycare setting, infants are immersed in language-rich environments. Caregivers talk to children throughout the day, during diaper changes, feedings, playtime, and quiet moments. These verbal exchanges, even if the child can´t respond with words yet, help [build the foundation](https://maplelawnchildcare.com/teaching-preschoolers-about-emotions-and-social-skills-building-strong-foundations-for-life/) for strong communication skills. Here are just a few ways daycare encourages early language growth: - Constant Verbal Engagement Daycare teachers are trained to speak slowly, clearly, and frequently with infants. They narrate daily routines (“Now we´re going to wash your hands”), ask simple questions, and respond with enthusiasm to sounds or gestures. These interactions model language and encourage babies to explore communication. - Songs and Rhymes Infants in quality childcare programs are exposed to songs, fingerplays, and rhymes throughout the day. This not only improves auditory memory but also introduces new vocabulary in a fun, engaging way. - Reading Time Even very young children benefit from being read to daily. At our daycare, teachers incorporate storytime using colorful board books and expressive storytelling that helps infants learn word patterns, sounds, and emotional cues. - Peer Interaction While babies may not carry on full conversations, they are constantly observing other children. These observations help infants develop social communication skills like eye contact, turn-taking, and listening, all key components of language development. **Benefits for Bilingual or Multilingual Families** For families where English is not the primary language spoken at home, enrolling your infant in daycare with English language exposure can help your child become bilingual more naturally. In our daycare, teachers are sensitive to each child´s cultural background and offer support to make transitions smooth and positive for both infants and parents. **How our Daycare supports your child´s growth** At our daycare, we understand how important these early years are for your child´s future. That’s where fine motor skills come in and they are more important than many parents realize. At our preschool, we believe in helping children develop these crucial skills through meaningful, hands-on-play, because little hands need big opportunities to practice, explore and grow. What are Fine Motor Skills? [Fine motor skills](https://maplelawnchildcare.com/little-hands-big-skills-playful-fine-motor-activities-for-preschoolers/?et_fb=1&PageSpeed=off "#finemotorskills") involve the coordination of small muscles – especially those in the hands and fingers. These muscles are responsible for precise movements used in everyday tasks like: - Holding a pencil or crayon - Cutting with scissors - Tying shoelaces or buttoning shirts - Eating with utensils - Opening containers or zipping jackets ![maplelawn about us page image](https://maplelawnchildcare.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Messy-Fun-Meaningful-Learning-Engaging-Art-Activities-at-our-Preschool-Daycare-e1761546473699.webp "Messy-Fun-Meaningful-Learning-Engaging-Art-Activities-at-our-Preschool-Daycare-e1761546473699 - Maplelawn Childcare - The Best Way to Start your Child's Education") In early childhood education, fine motor development is a core area of focus. Strong fine motor skills support school readiness, independence, and confidence in young children. Why Fine Motor Development Matters in Childcare In a preschool or childcare setting, we don’t just teach letters and numbers, we also [build the foundation for essential life skills](https://maplelawnchildcare.com/teaching-preschoolers-about-emotions-and-social-skills-building-strong-foundations-for-life/). When fine motor development is supported early on, children are more likely to succeed in tasks like writing, drawing, and self-care when they enter kindergarten. If these skills are underdeveloped, children may struggle with writing endurance, pencil control, or even frustration during daily routines. That’s why intentional, playful practice is key. Learning Through Play: Our Approach at Preschool At our preschool, we believe that children learn best through play. That’s why our fine motor activities are designed to be fun, engaging, and developmentally appropriate. Here are just a few playful ways to strengthen fine motor skills every day: 1. Playdough and Clay Play: Rolling, squeezing, pinching, and shaping dough helps build hand strength and finger control. Children love to create with playdough. 2. Cutting and Gluing Stations: Using child-safe scissors and glue sticks promotes hand-eye coordination and precision. 3. Lacing and Beading: Stringing beads or lacing shapes requires focus and fine motor movements, perfect for strengthening coordination. 4. Tweezers and Tongs: We set up games using child-sized tongs or tweezers to move small objects like pom-poms or cotton balls. These activities are simple but effective. 5. Sensory Bins: Digging through bins filled with rice, beans, or sand and finding hidden treasures provides rich tactile experiences and boosts small hand movements. 6. Art Activities: Painting with brushes, tearing paper for collages, or using stickers all involve precise control and build creative confidence. Each of these activities also supports focus, perseverance, and patience – skills that go far beyond fine motor control. ![](https://maplelawnchildcare.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/11.webp "11 - Maplelawn Childcare - The Best Way to Start your Child's Education") Supporting Fine Motor Skills at Home Fine motor can easily be fostered at home with materials that you already have. Here are a few simple ideas for your own routine: - Encourage your child to dress themselves, even if it takes longer. - Let them help in the kitchen: stirring, pouring, or spreading - Provide paper, crayons, stickers and tape for free drawing - Keep puzzles, building blocks, or lacing cards available - Offer child-sized tools for crafts or snack time The key is consistency and encouragement. Celebrate effort over perfection and give plenty of time for practice. Fine motor activities may seem small, but they have a big impact. At our preschool, we intentionally weave them into our daily schedule – not as worksheets, but as joyful moments of discovery. In every snip, scoop, and scribble, we see progress – and we know that the little hands we guide today will grow into capable, independent learners tomorrow. It marks the beginning of a child´s independence and social development, but it can also bring up questions and concerns for families. That is why strong communication between school and home is essential, especially during the toddler years. At this age, children are learning how to express themselves, build relationships, and understand the world around them. As parents, you want to stay connected and involved in your child´s growth. A high-quality preschool understands this and puts family communication at the center of the learning experience. **How our preschool keeps you in the loop** At our preschool, we believe communication is more than just updates; it´s about building relationships with families. Here´s how we ensure your´re always informed, included, and supported: - Daily Reports Each day, you´ll receive a summary of your toddler´s activities and participation in daily routines. Daily reports happen through written notes and digital platforms so you never miss important information, even during a busy workday. - Photos and Videos Our teachers love capturing moments of learning, play, and discovery. These snapshots are shared with parents regularly to give you a window into your child´s day and help spark meaningful conversations at home. - Parent-Teacher Conversations We encourage open dialogue between families and teachers. Whether it´s a quick check-in during pickup or a scheduled meeting, we´re always available to discuss progress, challenges, or questions you may have. - Developmental Milestone Updates As toddlers learn and grow, we track key developmental benchmarks: language, [motor skills,](https://maplelawnchildcare.com/little-hands-big-skills-playful-fine-motor-activities-for-preschoolers/) emotional regulation, and more. These insights help guide your child´s learning and give you the tools to support it at home. - Family Events and Workshops We regularly host events that bring families into the classroom experience. From family breakfasts to parenting workshops, these gatherings help [build community and keep communication strong](https://maplelawnchildcare.com/teaching-preschoolers-about-emotions-and-social-skills-building-strong-foundations-for-life/). **Building a partnership with Toddlers and their parents** Trust is built through consistency, respect, and honesty. That´s why our toddler teachers focus on nurturing not just your child, but your family as a whole. We respect our routines, value your insights, and always work with you to create the best experience for your toddler. When your child sees that their caregiver and parents are connected, they feel more secure. That emotional safety is key for confident exploration and learning. **Tips for Strengthening Communication at Home:** Even with a great preschool communication system, there are simple ways to support your toddler´s learning at home: - Ask specific questions like “Did you play outside today?” or “What book did your teacher read?” - Use photos or notes from the school to prompt conversations. - Share important updates with your child´s teacher (changes in routine, sleep, or mood). - Attend school events or volunteer, when possible, to stay involved. **Ready to Join a Preschool That Prioritizes Connection? At our preschool daycare, we believe that every splash of paint and glitter-streaked masterpiece holds a more profound purpose, supporting your child’s growth in exciting and meaningful ways. In the early years, art is a powerful tool. It encourages creativity, self-expression, problem-solving, and even builds the [fine motor skills](https://maplelawnchildcare.com/little-hands-big-skills-playful-fine-motor-activities-for-preschoolers/) children need for writing and self-care later on. When we give children the freedom to explore through art, we’re not just keeping them busy, we are helping them grow. Why Art Matters in Early Childhood Education Art plays a vital role in childcare and early childhood education because it engages multiple areas of development at once. It’s not just about making something beautiful, it is about learning through doing. Here’s how: - Creativity: Open-ended activities like painting, sculpting or collage making allow children to make choices, try new ideas, and imagine new worlds. It allows children to become problem-solvers who aren’t afraid to try new things or make mistakes. - Self-expression: Young children don’t always have the words to explain how they feel. Art becomes their language. A swirling red painting might be their way of expressing excitement or frustration. This supports emotional awareness and regulation. - Problem-Solving: Mixing colors, deciding what to glue where, or figuring out how to turn a box into a rocket, all these small decisions build confidence and critical thinking. Art activities involve planning, memory, and decision-making. - Fine Motor Skills: Holding crayons, cutting with scissors, squeezing glue bottles – all these tasks strengthen the muscles needed for writing, eating, and dressing themselves. These aren’t cute moments; they are an essential part of your child’s development. What Art Looks Like at our Preschool [Our preschool](https://maplelawnchildcare.com/preschool-program-3-5-years/) classrooms are full of inviting, hands-on art experiences designed to let kids explore freely. We don’t focus on perfect results; we focus on the process. Some of our favorite messy-yet-meaningful activities include: - Finger paints with natural materials like leaves and sponges - Sculpting with homemade play-dough or clay - Collage making with paper scraps, buttons, and recycled materials - Group murals where children work together on one large canvas Each activity is carefully designed to be developmentally appropriate, safe and engaging. Yes, sometimes we do get messy, but that mess is the magic of learning in action. ![our methodologies](https://maplelawnchildcare.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/12.webp "12 - Maplelawn Childcare - The Best Way to Start your Child's Education") The Role of Teachings in Creative Learning Our teachers are not just supervising these activities, they are guiding them with purpose. They observe, ask open-ended questions, and support each child’s ideas. This scaffolding encourages both [language development](https://maplelawnchildcare.com/nurturing-your-preschoolers-language-development/) and social interaction. Rather than directing the art, they guide it by offering materials, asking thoughtful questions, and encouraging reflection. ![our methodologies](https://maplelawnchildcare.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/12.webp "12 - Maplelawn Childcare - The Best Way to Start your Child's Education") For example: - “Tell me about what you made.” - “What do you think will happen if you mix those colors?” - “How did you come up with that idea?” These conversations help children expand their vocabulary, build confidence, and feel proud of their efforts. Teachers also use art as a tool to connect with other learning areas: color and shapes, storytelling, and even science experiments like mixing baking soda and vinegar to paint. Why Art is Essential in Preschool In preschool, art is a daily opportunity to support the whole child. It’s calming for some, energizing for others, and always full of discovery. At our preschool, we honor every child’s unique expression and provide the space and materials to bring their ideas to life. To us, a paint splattered smock and sticky fingers are signs of something bigger: a child who is exploring, growing, and learning in the best way possible. This may be normal for children their age, but with the [COVID-19](https://www.webmd.com/lung/coronavirus) virus still around, eating healthily every single day is now non-negotiable. While there are still no vaccines available to combat this disease, keeping the immune system strong and alert is one of the ways to prevent yourself and your loved ones from getting infected. We want everyone to be safe from the virus – whether they go to our [Manassas Park daycare](/) or not. Here are some tips on how to convince your “mini-me” to eat healthily: Focus on the quality of the food you’re providing. As much as possible, keep your ingredients organic or as close to its natural form as possible. Reduce packaged and processed food. Disguise the taste of healthier foods. Young or old, we all have a least favorite vegetable – and kids typically despise greens. Be a bit more creative with how you’re sneaking the “good stuff” into their meals. Try a fruit and leafy greens smoothie, or mix some carrots into mashed potatoes. Make healthy snacks more available. Instead of stocking up on their favorite candy bars, invest in getting fruits, nuts, and juices. A chocolate bar here and there won’t hurt, but don’t make it too accessible. Be a role model. The teachers in our **[Montessori School in Manassas Park, Virginia](/montessori-about-us/),** preach the importance of eating healthily, but your child is most likely to follow your example. So eat your greens! These tips can even be recycled for when Maple Lawn Montessori of Manassas Park is ready to open their doors again. Just think about the healthy snacks you’ll be able to prepare your kids for school. The brain is a highly unified piece of machinery with functions that operate in coordination with one another. Thus, your children’s emotional well-being and social capabilities provide them with a strong foundation for emerging mental abilities, together working as the bricks and mortar of brain architecture. Toxic stress can weaken the architecture of the developing brain of a child, which can eventually lead to lifelong problems in learning and behavior as well as their physical, and[ mental health](https://www.mhanational.org/what-every-child-needs-good-mental-health). As a [Montessori school in Manassas Park, Virginia](/montessori-about-us/), we at **Maple Lawn Montessori of Manassas Park** understand just how challenging life can get, especially with what’s happening today. Help ease your child’s stress and worries with the following techniques: Stop swamping their schedule. Give your children a little downtime to play and have fun. Make sleep a priority for them. This will help in boosting their mood and minimizing stress. Manage your own stress. Children absorb the energy that they feel around them. [Schedule a Tour](/schedule-a-tour/) ### Frequently Asked Questions ##### Q: Tell us a little bit about the in-person school tour? **A:** We prioritize understanding the specific needs of each parent. This insight allows us to tailor our school tours to highlight the most relevant aspects of our program. During the tour, we dedicate ample time to explaining our daily routine and educational process. Parents have the opportunity to meet our experienced staff, interact with teachers, and closely examine our classrooms. By showcasing our methodology, materials, and overall classroom environment, we aim to provide parents with a comprehensive understanding of our school and how it can best support their child’s development. ##### Q: Do you offer tours for prospective families? **A:** Yes, Maplelawn Childcare welcomes all interested families to come and see our facility. We offer daily in-person tours which can be easily booked by selecting [**Schedule a Tour**](/schedule-a-tour/) on our website. ##### Q: How will I be informed of my child’s progress? **A:** Maplelawn Childcare uses a mobile application for communications, it is simple and literally acts as a text message to the teacher or vice versa to know more about the child. We also encourage the traditional method of setting up a time to meet with the teacher before or after teaching hours. If you have concerns or just want to know about what your child is doing in the classroom, don’t hesitate to set up an appointment. Maplelawn Childcare offers parent-teacher conference twice a year, one in January and the second at the end of the year. That would be the best time to find out all about the child’s growth and progress. ##### Q: What is the Teacher Student Ratio? **A:** We keep our class sizes small to give each child lots of attention. Here’s how many children are in each classroom: - Infants (6 weeks – 18 months): 1 teacher for every 3 infants. - Toddlers (18 – 3 years): 1 teacher for every 6 students. - Preschoolers (3 – 5 years): 1 teacher for every 10 preschoolers. The biggest positive about this school is that there are plenty of learning opportunities for students with plenty of extra staff to teach different subjects for student learning. ![Kabahizi BOLAJI profile picture](https://maplelawnchildcare.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/ChIJQRkB7Eznt4kRnnrsOYEX-ew_da456a96bdbf9c645fbb7a8a238d2d38.jpg) [Kabahizi BOLAJI](https://www.google.com/maps/contrib/116191433240031531893/reviews)6 months ago This Daycare is the best ![Kailey Clemens profile picture](https://maplelawnchildcare.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/ChIJQRkB7Eznt4kRnnrsOYEX-ew_199abd25e76eb472f3fa666c3b2ba147.jpg) [Kailey Clemens](https://www.google.com/maps/contrib/101999634893223136559/reviews)6 months ago Not one to write reviews but as a first time parents we were terrified to bring our daughter to daycare. From day one of needing last minute care, Miss V. greeted us with warm and welcome arms and we immediately knew our daughter was in a good place. She started when she was 4 months old, and is now 17 months old. She is loved more than I could have ever imagined and treated wonderfully and respectfully. As full time working parents we truly couldn’t ask for a better environment for our little one to be growing up in. Would highly recommend to any of my family or friends. ![funmilola ogunkoya profile picture](https://maplelawnchildcare.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/ChIJQRkB7Eznt4kRnnrsOYEX-ew_286d196e3b06f6c655b6881f5d7ff04c.jpg) [funmilola ogunkoya](https://www.google.com/maps/contrib/109639494014124002584/reviews)7 months ago This is a good childcare center, it is very clean, does not smell and the kids are well taken care of. [Schedule a Tour](/schedule-a-tour/) # Frequently Asked Questions ##### Q: Do you offer tours for prospective families? **A:** Yes, Maplelawn Childcare welcomes all interested families to come and see our facility. We offer daily in-person tours which can be easily booked by selecting [**Schedule a Tour**](/schedule-a-tour/) on our website. ##### Q: Tell us a little bit about the in-person school tour? **A:** We prioritize understanding the specific needs of each parent. This insight allows us to tailor our school tours to highlight the most relevant aspects of our program. During the tour, we dedicate ample time to explaining our daily routine and educational process. Parents have the opportunity to meet our experienced staff, interact with teachers, and closely examine our classrooms. By showcasing our methodology, materials, and overall classroom environment, we aim to provide parents with a comprehensive understanding of our school and how it can best support their child’s development. We also invite special guests to entertain and educate our campers. ##### Q: How much play time do the children get in a day? **A:** In our Preschool, our children get about 2-3 hours of play time which includes morning social interaction, playground time for two 30-minutes and evening social interaction time. The children who get dropped off before 9 AM and who are in the school after 5 PM are interacting, playing with other children and with stem toys. The children get about an hour of playground time split into 2 half hour sessions. Having trouble viewing the form? They took care of my son and advanced his development while in their care. When I would go to pick him up to come home, he never wanted to leave them. The first day I dropped him off there I was afraid to let him go, but as the week progressed I felt very comfortable leaving him in their care. ![harry foster profile picture](https://maplelawnchildcare.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/ChIJQRkB7Eznt4kRnnrsOYEX-ew_7e342acb8e00849b63ee2062c918c66b.jpg) [harry foster](https://www.google.com/maps/contrib/108950423229761831618/reviews)10 months ago Best daycare, highly recommend. ![Prasanna Singh profile picture](https://maplelawnchildcare.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/ChIJQRkB7Eznt4kRnnrsOYEX-ew_ede3f1fd134fb813362736b58a675e24.jpg) [Prasanna Singh](https://www.google.com/maps/contrib/113384960669977289600/reviews)1 year ago This is a really good facility. The staff were very professional and the facility was clean. The study material for the Pre-K was really good with science, language, music and math as part of the curriculum. A little in the expensive side but worth it. ![Lapas Narongnu profile picture](https://maplelawnchildcare.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/ChIJQRkB7Eznt4kRnnrsOYEX-ew_71a2d78ec6bf3ce6d60f3eae6039a7c9.jpg) [Lapas Narongnu](https://www.google.com/maps/contrib/106840341289813532028/reviews)1 year ago Our daugher has been at this daycare for 10 months now and we are grateful for the loving care she received.
