Program Insight

At Maplelawn Childcare, our Primary Program gives 2 to 3-year-olds a gentle bridge from toddlerhood to preschool. This is the age of “I can do it myself!”, and we nurture that independence every day. Guided by the nationally renowned Frog Street curriculum, our early learning center blends predictable routines with play-based discovery that supports language, motor, cognitive and social-emotional growth. Children learn to share, follow simple directions, express their feelings and care for themselves, building the confidence they need for a smooth start in preschool.

Teacher’s Approach

Our Responsive Teaching Approach: Patient, Personal Care for Every Two-Year-Old With a 1:6 teacher-to-child ratio, our teachers give each child individualized attention and build the secure, trusting bonds that two-year-olds need to thrive. Teachers follow each child’s cues, temperament and pace, using positive reinforcement and gentle redirection instead of punishment. They model words for big feelings, coach turn-taking and sharing, and celebrate every small milestone, from washing hands alone to using new words. Families stay connected through our parent app with daily updates and photos, plus parent-teacher conferences twice a year.

Environment

A Safe, Nurturing Primary Classroom Near Me in Jessup, MD Families searching for childcare for 2-year-olds near Maplelawn, Fulton, Laurel or Jessup will find a safe, licensed and Maryland EXCELS-accredited classroom that feels like a “Home away from Home.” Our rooms are set up with child-sized, open learning centers for blocks, books, sensory play, art and pretend play, so children can choose, explore and tidy up on their own. Consistent daily routines for meals, rest and transitions give little ones a sense of security. Labeled shelves, picture schedules and books at every turn make the room print-rich and ready for early language.

Enrichment Programs

Focused Enrichment: Early STEM, Language and Music for Toddlers Our primary curriculum adds age-appropriate enrichment that turns everyday curiosity into learning. Children sort colors and shapes, count snacks, pour and measure at the sensory table, and watch simple cause-and-effect experiments like sinking and floating. Daily circle time with songs, finger plays and movement builds vocabulary, listening skills and rhythm. These short, hands-on experiences match two-year-old attention spans and lay the groundwork for preschool math, science and literacy.

Extra-Curricular Activities

Engaging Activities That Make Our Primary Program a Top Choice for Enrollment We weave in a variety of activities that support well-rounded development for 2 and 3-year-olds:
  • Sensory Exploration: Water, sand, play dough and textured materials that build fine motor skills and calm, focused attention.
  • Gardening & Outdoor Play: Daily outdoor time, nature walks and simple gardening that connect children to the world around them.
  • Music & Movement: Songs, dancing, instruments and indoor sports that build coordination, rhythm and gross motor confidence.
  • Arts & Crafts: Painting, coloring and collage projects where the process matters more than the product.
  • Storytime & Early Language: Picture books, puppets and rhymes that grow vocabulary and a love of reading.
  • Pretend Play: Kitchen, dolls and dress-up corners where children practice everyday routines and social skills.

Methodology

Our Play-Based Primary Methodology: Learning Through Routine and Discovery We believe two-year-olds learn best through play, repetition and real-life experiences. Our balanced approach pairs the structure of the Frog Street curriculum with free exploration, hands-on activities and predictable daily routines. Self-help skills are part of the day: children practice handwashing, putting on shoes, cleaning up and serving snacks, and we partner with families on toilet learning when each child is ready. By making learning joyful and secure, we help every child step into preschool confident, curious and ready to learn.

Our experience at Maplewood has been great. My son learned so much from Ms Tallatt who has been so amazing. The teachers are welcoming and communicate as needed. Thanks Ms Vee for making our sons transition into Maplewood a smooth one.

My child has been here for about 7 months and has loved it. All of the teachers really care for them like they are their own. It's never easy to leave your child with someone else, but the folks at Maplelawn Childcare are some of the best for the job. Also, they are willing to work with you to make sure you and your child are happy (like if you want more photos or for infants to have food at a certain time).

As a first time mom, leaving my child is not something that I'm comfortable with. However the staff/teachers at Maple Lawn made me feel very comfortable with leaving my child. I know my child is in good hands and well taken care of.

My sons have been attending here for a year and a half. My oldest graduated from here and I felt comfortable enough with my youngest staying here. I have nothing but positive things to say. I love how the teachers encourage parent involvement in regards to student progress. The biggest positive about this school is that there are plenty of learning opportunities for students with plenty of extra staff to teach different subjects for student learning.

Not one to write reviews but as a first time parents we were terrified to bring our daughter to daycare. From day one of needing last minute care, Miss V. greeted us with warm and welcome arms and we immediately knew our daughter was in a good place. She started when she was 4 months old, and is now 17 months old. She is loved more than I could have ever imagined and treated wonderfully and respectfully. As full time working parents we truly couldn’t ask for a better environment for our little one to be growing up in. Would highly recommend to any of my family or friends.

The ladies of Maple lawn are wonderful, they were always nice and respectful. They took care of my son and advanced his development while in their care. When I would go to pick him up to come home, he never wanted to leave them. The first day I dropped him off there I was afraid to let him go, but as the week progressed I felt very comfortable leaving him in their care.

This is a really good facility. The staff were very professional and the facility was clean. The study material for the Pre-K was really good with science, language, music and math as part of the curriculum. A little in the expensive side but worth it.

My daughter has been attending this daycare since she was just 6 months old, and she will be turning 2 next month. From the very beginning, the teachers and staff have been amazing. They are kind, attentive, and genuinely care about the children. It gives me so much peace of mind knowing that my daughter is in such a loving and nurturing environment every day. She has grown, learned, and thrived so much during her time here. I’m truly grateful for the dedication and warmth the entire team brings, and I highly recommend this daycare to any parent looking for a safe and supportive place for their little one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Tell us a little bit about the in-person school tour?

A: We prioritize understanding the specific needs of each parent. This insight allows us to tailor our school tours to highlight the most relevant aspects of our program. During the tour, we dedicate ample time to explaining our daily routine and educational process. Parents have the opportunity to meet our experienced staff, interact with teachers, and closely examine our classrooms. By showcasing our methodology, materials, and overall classroom environment, we aim to provide parents with a comprehensive understanding of our school and how it can best support their child’s development.

Q: Do you offer tours for prospective families?

A: Yes, Maplelawn Childcare welcomes all interested families to come and see our facility. We offer daily in-person tours which can be easily booked by selecting Schedule a Tour on our website.

Q: How will I be informed of my child’s progress?

A: Maplelawn Childcare uses a mobile application for communications, it is simple and literally acts as a text message to the teacher or vice versa to know more about the child.

We also encourage the traditional method of setting up a time to meet with the teacher before or after teaching hours. If you have concerns or just want to know about what your child is doing in the classroom, don’t hesitate to set up an appointment.

Maplelawn Childcare offers parent-teacher conference twice a year, one in January and the second at the end of the year. That would be the best time to find out all about the child’s growth and progress.

Q: What is the Teacher Student Ratio?

A: We keep our class sizes small to give each child lots of attention. Here’s how many children are in each classroom:

  • Infants (6 weeks – 17 months): 1 teacher for every 3 infants.
  • Toddlers (18 months –  24 months): 1 teacher for every 6 students.
  • Primary (2 –  3 years): 1 teacher for every 6 students.
  • Preschoolers (3 – 5 years): 1 teacher for every 10 preschoolers.
